DANIEL JOHNSTON | HIROSHI SUEYOSHI: SCUPTURAL CLAY
Exhibition Dates: May 1 - June 10, 2015
Curatorial Statement
In GreenHill’s Spring 2015 exhibition Daniel Johnston │ Hiroshi Sueyoshi : Sculptural Clay visitors will see remarkable examples of wood-fired, wheel-thrown stoneware and hand-built porcelain and clay by nationally recognized ceramic artists Daniel Johnston and Hiroshi Sueyoshi. The exhibition follows a series of exhibitions organized by GreenHill examining the deep-rooted cultural heritage, variety of approaches and outstanding practitioners working in the clay medium in North Carolina. These exhibitions include: North Carolina Clay—Past to Present (2003); Toshiko Takaezu: The Art of Clay (2007) and By Example: NC Potters and Their Mentors (2012). The show brings together two renowned clay makers from different parts of the state at different moments in their careers. Daniel Johnston, one of the newest “large-pot” ceramicists living in the Seagrove clay community to come to the national forefront, will present a site-specific installation for thirty large jars designed for GreenHill’s space. Hiroshi Sueyoshi, who has worked as artist in residence at Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington’s Pancoe Education Center for the past nine years, will present a condensed version of his recent retrospective exhibition there, “Matter of Reverence”, covering four decades of his production in hand-built porcelain and clay.
