MISSION+ CULTURAL EQUITY VISION

GREENHILL CENTER FOR NC ART

The mission of GreenHill Center for NC Art is to promote the visual art and artists of North Carolina by engaging a broad community through exhibitions and educational programs.

This mission leads us to provide a platform for exploration and investment in art for everyone, including those who have barriers to including art in their daily lives. By prioritizing access, GreenHill’s wide-ranging initiatives build empathy and connection through expressive, innovative, and thought-provoking arts experiences.

AS A CHAMPION FOR NC ART, GREENHILL ASPIRES TO:

  • Pursue cultural consciousness throughout our organization through substantive learning and formal, transparent policies.
  • Acknowledge and dismantle inequities within our policies, systems, programs, and services, and report organizational progress.
  • Commit time and resources to grow more diverse leadership within our board, staff, donors, members and advisory bodies.
  • Create spaces and opportunities for marginalized communities.
  • Be informed by and reflect the populations present in the communities we serve.
  • Hold ourselves accountable for promoting and cultivating cultural equity.
  • Measure outcomes for diversity, equity, access, and inclusion.

DEFINITIONS

GreenHill is committed to the practices of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in order to build access for all potential visitors.
To us, diversity means involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds, focusing on the current and historic residents of North Carolina. This means making a welcoming space where every person interested in participating is able to be present.
Equity requires treating people fairly, not equally. Cultural equity embodies the values, policies, and practices that ensure that all people—including but not limited to those who have been historically underrepresented based on race/ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, socioeconomic status, geography, citizenship status, country of origin, or religion - have opportunities to benefit from our programs.
Inclusion is providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as members of historically marginalized groups. At GreenHill, this means making sure that our spaces and policies allow everyone to engage in the programs and activities they are interested in.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS & AFFIRMATIONS

In the United States, and of our particular concern in North Carolina, there are systems of power that grant privilege and access unequally such that inequity and injustice result, and that must be continuously addressed and changed.
Cultural equity is critical to the long-term viability of the arts sector.
We must all hold ourselves accountable, because acknowledging and challenging inequities and working in partnership with communities we serve will make change happen.
Everyone deserves equal access to a full, vibrant creative life, which is essential to a healthy and democratic society.
Artists help us to recognize our shared humanity, challenge inequities, and embrace change. We present work from artists who have significantly varied viewpoints.
GreenHill is sensitive to the impact that the display of certain artworks can have on gallery visitors. We commit to providing appropriate interpretive signage to contextualize the significance of any concerning artwork on view.
If a visitor is uncomfortable with the content and/or visual imagery of a work on view in the gallery, that visitor is encouraged to express their concern to a staff member.
