The wide selection of works by outstanding North Carolina potters is one of the highlights of Winter Show. Gretchen Quinn’s ceramics combine hand carved patterns with clean, modern shapes in functional pieces that are designed for everyday use. Her down-to-earth yet elegant esthetic is apparent in these platters with geometric etchings and translucent white glaze that a recent article in Walter Magazine describes as “an ideal blank canvas for flowers, dinner parties, or kitchen shelves.” http://www.waltermagazine.com/art-and-culture/gretchen-quinn-pottery/
Gretchen Quinn moved to the Triangle from Seattle where she works in her studio in Boylan Heights in Raleigh. On her process, she states: “To me there is beauty in a seam left showing on the wall of a cup, or a rim that is just a hair off perfectly round and in fingerprints permanently trapped in glaze. These are the secrets left behind by the maker. They are the visible cues that shout out ‘I was not mass produced!’”
This is the first time Quinn’s ceramics will be seen in Winter Show.
Winter Show is curated by Edie Carpenter, bringing together over 120 artists each year from across North Carolina and constitutes a comprehensive survey of the finest art and crafts being produced in the state. The artists come from around the state, with a mix of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, fabric and fiber works, all within a harmonious installation. Artists showing work in the exhibition vary not only by mediums, but also by experience, background, and perspective. Winter Show is the quintessential showing of art produced by North Carolina artists today. On December 1, join us for one of Greensboro’s most popular holiday season events: the Collector’s Choice Fundraiser. The fundraiser provides a rare opportunity to truly become engaged with the very best art North Carolina has to offer. Participants have an advance opportunity to purchase pieces in Winter Show before they are available to the public and to meet and mix with exhibiting artists over food and wine.
