GreenHill is seeking all interested North Carolina artists to apply for the Pop-Up residency and Open NC Art Review programs. To qualify as a North Carolina artist, artists should be significantly involved in the North Carolina arts community, born and raised North Carolinians, and/or live, work, or study in our state.
Supporting these artists is the core of GreenHill’s mission; GreenHill exists to strengthen artist careers creatively and financially. Laura Way, GreenHill’s Executive Directed says, “We recognize the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary art and advocate to expand support of all artists – dancers, musicians, poets, and more – because we are committed to the idea that a thriving arts community is essential to the well-being of North Carolina’s culture and economy.”
An opportunity that began three years ago is GreenHill’s Pop-Up Residency program, a 10-day residency in which selected North Carolina artists create and showcase their works in the studios. Musicians, creative writers, poets, performers, visual artists and creators of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. A Pop-Up Residency is perfect for the artist who enjoys the interaction with visitors and likes to engage in active conversations about creative practices. Our goal is for the artist to be energized by the interactions and for the visitor to deepen their experience at GreenHill and help them make connections between the works in the gallery and an artist’s creative process. Materials stipend of $200 is provided for each selected artist as well as access to some of the resources of the studios. Interested applicants can apply online at www.greenhillnc.org/popup ($5 application fee).
Join us at GreenHill to meet Pop-Up Residency artist, Beatrice Ruggeri. She will explore installation art through different mediums that will engage in active conversation about her creative journey. Shifting between abstraction and representation Ruggeri’s work references observations that she’s made in faraway places from the past, such as her roots in Rome. Being far from home, and now establishing a home for her family in Durham, she has redefined the roots she channels in her work as energies and memories, not the physical environment. Through her work, Ruggeri invites viewers to take a peek into her past and her present. "I want others to feel as comfortable in their space as I do. Let my work be an example of what having any form of art in your daily life can help you accomplish.” Ruggeri will be on-site in the studios September 26th through October 5th, where her finished installation entitled Suspended will be on display. Ruggeri’s artistic world is one of vibrant color and compelling pattern—her paintings are displayed on an array of substrates such as canvas, brick wall, rocks, and wood. All of which effectively allow her to use color in a representation of emotion, both challenging and joyful, that stem from her memories of personal moments. As she describes, “When I revisit my past I don’t grasp real faces or actual places, I remember energies and the way I feel about the moment through color. I share this in my work to allow others a chance to know me, and let me know them.”
Artists are also invited to discuss their work, gain exposure and network with other North Carolina artists through GreenHill’s Open NC Art Review (ONCAR) program. North Carolina artists are invited to present 15 images of artwork during a five-minute slideshow and get feedback from GreenHill Director of Curatorial & Artistic Programs Edie Carpenter and other arts professionals. Upcoming review will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. The deadline to apply is March 9, 2019, and limited spots available. Interested applicants can apply online at www.greenhillnc.org/open-nc-art-review ($5 application fee).
GreenHill uses a Pecha Kucha format during ONCAR to encourage succinct and compelling presentations. Pecha Kucha is a simple presentation format in which each artist presents 15 images of their work. The images uploaded through the Jotform registration link will advance automatically every 20 seconds as each artist presents, allowing for a 5-minute presentation. Thus, artists should prepare 20 seconds of dialogue for each slide. Note cards are welcome; rehearsing is highly recommended.
Bernadette Potts, a presenter at July’s ONCAR who has been invited to exhibit in Winter Show 2019 wrote the following to Edie Carpenter about her experience, “The review event, including the artists’ presentations, discussions of their processes, inspirations, growth, and past/present/future endeavors...in addition to your expertise, has encouraged me to pursue further development in my passion as a photography artist.”
