POP-UP ARTIST SUNNY GRAVELY
Sunny Gravely is a visual artist, educator and creative entrepreneur from Greensboro, NC. Gravely earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Howard University in 1998 and soon after moved to New York City and pursue her artistic career. She taught in the public school system while attending the graduate school at Pratt Institute and received her Masters of Science degree with a concentration in Art and Design Education in 2004. She is a co-owner of Greensboro’s The Artist Bloc, an art gallery, coffee shop and retail art supply store.
Culminating in a public exhibition for First Friday on May 4th, Sunny's work will seek to "inform guests about her artistic process as well as share her story and inspiration behind her work."
After working primarily as a painter, Sunny sees this residency as an opportunity to translate her creativity into the sculptural form. During this residency, she will be exploring a variety of media and how it can be incorporated into her sculptural work. Using plaster gauze, mesh, paint, buttons and found objects from home, she will design a three-dimensional motif that represents her personal feelings about identity, race, and aging. She will be working in the Studios from April 25 to May 4, where children and families can come and learn more about her creative process. Sunny will be leading a workshop on April 26 for participants to learn the versatility of working with an array of two-dimensional materials to create a three-dimensional piece of art using plaster gauze and found objects. Selected works will also be available for sale in The Shop.
