Light on China | Photographs by Jerome De Perlinghi, Joe Lipka, Bill McAllister, David M. Spear and Barbara Tyroler highlights five photographic artists who have travelled to China and through their lens have captured the sights, textures, nuances, shadow and light they found there.
Light on China will facilitate a dialogue around generally received notions and mythology surrounding China and contemporary visual representations of the globe’s most powerful emerging economy. The exhibition offers the artists a platform with which to share their perspectives of their journey unencumbered by external expectations of what we will see. Audiences will get to peak behind screens of stereotype and follow those who have ventured in; whose camera shutters have captured images of China from cities to remote villages. Visitors will see landscapes of striking abstract beauty and reflections of the day-to-day, leading the viewer to ponder if all human emotions are not inextricably linked.
Barbara Tyroler will be presenting a selection from her recent series “Beijing Impressions; Portraits of a Foreign Landscape” -- works inspired by the writings of the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai. Tyroler’s multilayered color prints on paper portraying people in their surroundings translate a vision of a society in transition. In the artist’s words they “synthesize the ancient with the contemporary, the literal with the metaphoric, to reflect the people and the city in cultural and political transformation.” Several of Tyroler’s prints on silk panels as well as new works will be on display. Bill McAllister will present 20 works produced after two recent trips to China utilizing an infrared camera. The warm-toned prints produced by the alternative process recall that of 19th century landscape photography. David M. Spear will present ten large format digital silver prints taken during an expedition up the Yangtze River from Beijing, certain of which have never been seen. Joe Lipka will present pigment prints taken in the Gobi Desert exhibited in 2011 Xiang Sha Wan.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Jerome De Perlinghi
Jerome De Perlinghi was born in Brussels, Belgium and currently resides in Wilson, North Carolina. His photographs have regularly been published in American and European newspapers and magazines, including “Liberation,” “Le Monde,” “The Washington Post,” “The Philadelphia Inquirer,” and “Telerama” for four decades. He has published six books, and his works are included in the permanent collections of The Library of Congress, La Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and le Musee de la Photographie of Charleoi in Belgium. Along with teaching college workshops in photography he is currently working on two new book projects: The Rust Belt Cities and The Wilson Project – photographs of the people of his adopted city taken over a period of thirty months.
Barbara Tyroler
Barbara Tyroler received her M.Ed. from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst with emphasis on visual communication and community arts development. She received her MFA in Imaging and Digital Arts from the University of Maryland where she studied photography and videography. In between graduate degrees, Tyroler and Cooper raised daughter Sam and founded animage Photography and Videography. As a practicing artist, educator, and photographer recently relocated from the DC metropolitan area, Tyroler's work focuses on abstracted figurative portraiture with emphasis on family, relationships, and issues of identity. Before returning to her hometown Chapel Hill in the summer of 2009, Tyroler served on the faculty of the art department at the University of Maryland where she taught traditional wet darkroom, digital imaging, and lens based critical theory. She is the recipient of over 25 arts and community development grants. She is a founding member of FRANK gallery in Chapel Hill and a chief organizer of the gallery’s photography series.
David M. Spear
David M. Spear lives in Madison and has been a full-time photographer for the past 20 years. His first book of photography, The Neugents: "Close to Home, looked at one North Carolina family and their lifestyle through 66 photographs. Visible Spirits documents time spent traveling and living in Mexico since the 1990s, capturing ordinary people -- from hairdressers to day laborers and his most recent book, 10 Days in Havana (1913) presents fifty photographs Spear shot with an I-Phone during a ten-day period in Cuba. Spears was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1992-93 and a Headlands Center for the Arts Fellow in 1996. Additionally, he has had solo shows at the Center for Creative Leadership, the Ackland Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Greenhill and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. His work resides in permanent collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, the North Carolina Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Birmingham Museum of Art.
Bill McAllister
Bill McAllister has been involved in creating and teaching photography for over 30 years. He has taught at the Art Institute of Atlanta, Chowan College and the Art School in Carrboro. McAllisterwas a fellow at the Michael Karolyi Memorial Institute in Vence, France, and is a longtime member of the Society for Photographic Education. His work has been exhibited at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Duke University, Meredith College, Greenhill, The Center for Fine Art Photography, Gallery Mesa AZ, Wedge Gallery NY, Durham Arts Council, and the Horace William House. Publications include American Photographer Magazine, Shots Magazine, and the University of Texas Press. Works are in the permanent collection of GlaxoSmithKline.
Joe Lipka
Joe Lipka was born in Lorain, Ohio (near Cleveland), in 1951. He attended University of Notre Dame in Indiana, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Business Administration.
Joe’s introduction to photography began with six photography courses at Notre Dame and included workshops with Bruce Barnbaum, Stu Levy, David Bayles & Ted Orland, and Edna Bullock. Recent exhibitions by Lipka include juried exhibitions at the North Carolina Museum of Art as well as solo exhibitions at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center and the Xiang Sha Wan Art Palace, People’s Republic of China.
