CATCHING UP WITH POP-UP ARTIST ANN TILLEY
This year GreenHill's Pop-Up Artist Residency celebrated its 2nd birthday! To date we have had 10 artists participate in our program, which brings local artists into the ArtQuest Studios to share their work with children and families over a 10 day period. Artists submit a project description of what they would like to do while in residence, with an emphasis on how their work will engage the variety of visitors we have at GreenHill. As we begin our third year of this program, we are catching up with some of our past Pop-Up Artist Residents to see what they are working on now.
GreenHill is currently accepting submissions for our Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 Pop-Up Residencies. To read more about the program and to apply, visit here.
Ann Tilley was a participant of our very first year of Pop-Up Residencies in 2015, and brought with her to ArtQuest her colorful yarns, fun and funky knit houses, and her charming knitting machine. Ann spent her residency working with visitors asking them about their homes through drawing for her to translate into knit pieces on her knitting machine for a collaborative piece entitled “Our Home”. Her rich knowledge of textiles and her contemporary spin on traditional processes makes her work especially exciting for visitors to learn about.
Ann graduated from Durham School of Arts and later achieved a BFA in Fashion & Fibers from Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, Georgia. Since then she’s worked closely with numerous galleries and expositions throughout North Carolina, California, and New York. Her knitted and crocheted works bring together her love of poetry and typography, as well as symbolism through her own personal experiences
Ann recently co-founded a clothing line with her friend, Anne, aptly titled "Ann & Anne", focusing on womenswear made of high-quality, digitally-printed fabrics, and entirely manufactured in Greensboro. She says about her new endeavor “Crisp cottons, effortless silks, and sumptuous velvets printed in fun and playful prints for unique and ethically-made wardrobe additions. We are selling online and by appointment at our studio on South Elm Street, downtown Greensboro.”
You can catch Ann’s work on display in her solo knitted art show at Camino Bakery in Winston-Salem for the month of October. Her tiny knit houses will be for sale, mortgage-free!
