CATCHING UP WITH POP-UP ARTIST ALLISON LUCE
This year GreenHill's Pop-Up Artist Residency celebrated its 2nd birthday! To date we have had 10 artists participate in our program, which brings local artists into the ArtQuest Studios to share their work with children and families over a 10 day period. Artists submit a project description of what they would like to do while in residence, with an emphasis on how their work will engage the variety of visitors we have at GreenHill. As we begin our third year of this program, we are catching up with some of our past Pop-Up Artist Residents to see what they are working on now.
GreenHill is currently accepting submissions for our Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 Pop-Up Residencies. To read more about the program and to apply, visit here.
Ceramic artist Allison Luce was our very first Pop-Up Artist back in May of 2015. During her residency, Allison worked with visitors to create various textured ceramic tiles for her finalized large installation in The Gallery at GreenHill, titled Ancient Expanse. While in residence, Luce worked alongside children and families and shared examples of her work in various stages of the ceramic process for visitors to explore.
Allison has traveled the world with her art, completing residencies across the United States as well as in Canada, Germany, Denmark and Italy. Most recently, Allison spent six weeks in the spring of 2017 teaching sculpture for Gordon College's Gordon-IN-Orvieto program in Orvieto, Italy. She says about her experience, "Italy this spring was a fantastic experience. Amidst the sight-seeing, gelato eating and coffee drinking, I was thrilled to see the hard work and dedication of the Gordon students. Determined to stretch the material confines of clay, the students created more elaborate work than we all could have imagined. Using the architecture, museums and artifacts found in Orvieto as inspiration, the students created sophisticated and extravagant sculptures."
This past June, Allison had a commissioned piece permanently installed in the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. A continuation of her "Ancient Expanse" series, it consists of seven four-foot in diameter white Plexiglas panels and is comprised of hundreds of hand-made ceramic objects, making it her largest project to date- stretching 46 feet across the wall!
Recently, Allison had a solo show at UNC Charlotte in September showcasing some of her new work, including two ceramic wall installations and seven ceramic wall pieces. Currently, she is back in her Charlotte, NC studio working on new sculpture pieces inspired by her time to Europe.
It is safe to say that Allison has certainly stayed busy since her time with us as a Pop-Up Artist! We are excited to see what she creates next. To stay up to date with Allison's artwork, check out her website at www.allisonluce.com.
