This Wednesday, February 8th, the shop at GreenHill will host a B.Y.O.V (Be your own Valentine) event from 5:30PM - 7PM. With 20 jewelry artists to choose from, there is sure to be something for you.
Included in this blog is an interview from one of our featured artists, Maria Eife. We are so excited to have her work in our shop!
Keep scrolling down to peruse earrings from each of our shop artists :)
Who are you and what do you do?
I am Maria Eife and I am a jewelry designer working with 3D printing and digital technologies. I studied Jewelry, Metals & CAD-CAM at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. I currently have a studio in the shared JV Collective in Philadelphia.
What would you like to highlight about your pieces that will be shown at GreenHill?
I create my pieces by building them in CAD and then they are printed using the SLS process. The material is lightweight but also very strong and flexible. It is also porous and I dye all the colors in my studio after they are printed. My work is inspired by the structure found in both the natural and built worlds, as well as an exploration of materials, processes and color.
What do you like about your work?
I love embracing and creating imperfections using technology and the ability to make endless variations on a theme. In the nylon pieces, I love that my work on the computer is balanced by the dye process, with which I am able to get a little messy.
How has your practice changed over time?
My practice has changed with technology and my personal experiences. I studied CAD-CAM in college, but the 3D printing technologies were not what they are today; it was expensive and the materials were not that great. As they became accessible, I used them more for my work. I use digital techniques and 3D printing quite a bit now. But lately I am feeling the pull to work more at the bench and metal, which I attribute to a few short residency experiences I have had recently. I have a line of sterling silver that I hope to expand upon this year.
What is your dream project?
Design/make Olympic Medals.
What superpower would you have and why?
Is time stopping a superpower? Because I always seem to run out of it.
