Beyond Ornament: Curriculum Connections
August 3 - November 4, 2018
Beyond Ornament is a major survey exhibition highlighting North Carolina makers of studio jewelry. The artists selected for the exhibition produce objects that enhance and embellish the human body and also question what jewelry and ornament can be. They pursue projects extending beyond the body and present works that cannot be contained by the traditional jewelry case. Through sculptural installation, juxtapositions of scale, unconventional materials, and narrative content the artists in Beyond Ornament broaden the context for jewelry. They bridge cutting-edge concepts and traditional skills blurring the boundaries between art, craft, and design.
Objective: Young visitors of all age groups will create age-appropriate projects that connect to the themes of this exhibition. They will be exposed to the ideas of Architecture & Design, Jewelry Making & History of Ornamentation, and Geometry in Art.
Architecture & Design
- Pre K – 2nd: Playing with line and color, students will create prints that mimic the preliminary design sketches of an architect. The project is inspired by the Peter Antor pieces. Another project they could do: using pieces of paper cut into shapes, students may create a collage of a building.
- 3rd – 5th: Kat Cole’s work is inspired by the places she has lived. Draw a picture of your favorite place, home, building, etc. We will incorporate the drawing into a collage-like piece similar to Cole’s jewelry.
- 6th – 12th: Create a design that could be used for both a building and a piece of jewelry. Students will talk about the elements of art and how to apply them to architecture, art, and design.
Jewelry Making & History of Ornamentation
- Pre K – 2nd: Using beads and colored pasta, students will thread their own unique necklaces. They will also have the option to design and decorate a wild, multi-media bracelet.
- 3rd – 5th: Design an over-the-top hat inspired by the Kit Paulson headpiece, Opaline Corona. Students will learn about the many different styles of headpiece ornamentation cross-culturally and throughout history.
- 6th – 12th: Using different materials, students will create their own statement piece necklaces. Students can make their own beads, create cords with yarn, and embroider with threads.
Geometry in Art
- Pre K – 2nd: Students will learn the difference between geometric and organic shapes, as well as monochromatic color schemes. They will be creating patterns to build a design inspired by the pieces by Kat Cole.
- 3rd – 5th: Students will observe and discuss the difference between symmetry and asymmetry while looking for examples of each within the gallery. They will create their own symmetrical 2D piece inspired by Ian Henderson’s piece.
- 6th – 12th: Using a compass, students will create repeating designs similar to the patterns predominantly found in Islamic art. Students will observe the Ian Henderson pieces to find evidence of symmetry, pattern, and geometry.
